Description

Trey was #621 from the Sept '11 auction. During the sale it was obvious that this bay TB gelding was very lame and it appeared that there was something seriously wrong with his hind leg. We purchased him during the auction for RB, but due to his wonderful personality Mary requested to take him home for a few days prior to RB so that he could have a few days of love.

Here is Trey's write up in Mary's own words:

We bought Trey at the Auction last Sunday as a rainbow bridge candidate. We were given no information on him but we believe he was 3-4 years old and either a WB or a very heavy TB. He was three legged lame and looked like he hadnt had a good meal in a long time. Staff and I talked and it was decided that after taking Jonah to QAR Sunday I would be bringing Trey home and giving him a few good days before humanely euthanizing him.

The entire week Trey had visitors that came with gifts in the form of peaches, apples and carrots (and I think at some point graham crackers too.) He was spoiled and pampered and fussed over. He had a buffet of grass hays and alfalfa and got the very best grain money can buy. I kept him comfortable on medications, which seemed to help his get around.

Monday he got a bath, which he was a total gentleman for, he stood for his ears to be trimmed and his tail to be brushed out. Trey made it very clear he liked the life he was living. He grazed in my yard the entire day and when he took a nap I sat with him. After 20 minutes or so he sat up, put his lips to my face, ruffled my hair and laid back down.

Tuesday Trey saw the vet and the vet confirmed that there was nothing he could do to repair Treys leg. He had a broken Stifle that has already mostly healed. He said he couldnt even make him pasture sound. He had guests and spent his day lounging in the yard since his guests complained the fence got in the way of them petting him.

Wednesday we had a party to celebrate Trey, he got his very own sheet cake with carrots drawn on the top. He preferred peaches to his cake but he was very polite about it. At one point Trey tried to climb up on my deck to get closer to all the happenings. After all the party was about Trey wasnt it?

Thursday I had a crazy day at work but two different sets of visitors from Treys fan club came and spent time with him.

Friday we had another mini party for him. He seemed to really like being the center of attention and no matter how many guests he had, he made sure to greet them all. With visitors, he treated them all equally. Everybody got time to spend with Trey and Trey seemed to really like hearing each one of them saying kind words. He was a ladies man but liked hanging with the men too. He was amazing with kids, he seemed to really have a thing for them as well.

Yesterday he spent the whole day hanging out with his best bud Marcus, and when people came over to ride they both soaked up the attention. At the end of the day I knew we had reached the end of Treys good days. He was tired. He had had a big week and put on his big boy face to humor us but I could see in his eye last night that he was done. For the first time the whole week he didnt come up the pasture to greet me and when I walked to see him, he didnt call to me. I hugged his neck and sobbed, and he put his head on my shoulder- I was trying to comfort him but instead he was trying to comfort me.

We said our goodbyes and again I was sobbing, I tried my best to be strong but he knew, and even then he was trying to console me. Multiple times throughout the week he would drop his head and put it to my chest. His timing was always perfect, this time being no exception. Trey was at peace and comfortable until the very end. He died knowing he was loved and special, and no doubt he was both.

Id like to Thank everyone for their support and kindness this week. Thank you to the other staff members for letting Trey have this week to himself. Thank you to the people who donate to RB, without them we wouldn't be able to end the pain and suffering of special horses like Trey and Jonah. Everyone of these horses takes a piece of our hearts and with every horse it hurts a little bit more, but in the end we have done the right thing for the horses and that is what we are about. And Thanks to the people who took time out of their days to come spoil Trey, he deserved it and Im grateful to have friends like you. Trey was a unique horse, I know he touched the lives of all of you just like he touched mine. Most of all, I Thank Trey for giving me the best week Ive had in a long time. He gave me the reminders I needed to enjoy life and keep what is important, important.

RIP Handsome boy, until we meet again...
