Petal - 26yr Bay Thoroughbred Mare - 1/18/2013

Miracle was pulled from a slaughter truck after being shipped across country and being rejected for slaughter at the Canadian border. She was in terrible condition, crippled and in pain - however at the time no one was certain how much of her condition was attributed to long days on a trailer and how much was her actual condition. She was saved, rested, and taken to a vet. The vet had bad news. Miracle had many chips in her front fetlocks, both front hooves were sloughing and she had no cartilage in her pasterns. The vet had to trim, pad, and nerve block her to make it humane for her to travel to OSU, and said that she had no realistic chance of improvement and should be put down. Miracle was put down at OSU via the Rainbow Bridge Fund.

Gus - 26yr Gray Quarter Horse Gelding - 10/24/2012

Gus was euthanized because of unmanageable pain due to hoof issues, severe arthritis, cancer, bouts of collic, and all over pain. Gus would go down and would not be able to get up without assistance and had sores from struggling when he was down. She was not anticipating having to rescue Gus, and the vet bills associated with his initial treatment and care so Rainbow Bridge funds were used to help with euthanasia costs.

Kelta - 15yr Cremello Appaloosa Mare - 8/12/2012

Kelta's owner applied for RB because Kelta was now completely unsound, depressed and in a great deal of pain. After evaluation, the written evaluation of the mare's farrier along with a consult of her previous vet records, it was decided that she qualified for RB. Kelta was put down on 8/12/12 at QAR.

Cherry - 7yr Palomino Quarter Pony Mare - 3/23/2012

Lucy - 30yr Chestnut Quarter Horse Mare - 2/24/2012

Lucy was an older Quarter Horse mare from the kill pen who was probably in her 30's. We were told by a previous owner that once upon a time she had been a champion barrel racer. When she landed in the kill pen she was in very bad shape. She had Cushings, very bad arthritis, glaucoma, and she was very thin and neglected. Lucy was lucky enough to find a home that was willing to take her on and rehab her. Unfortunately it was quickly determined that Lucy was past the point of humane rehab. She wouldn't lay down because it hurt her too bad to get back up, she wouldn't stop pacing and panicking over her inability to see, and she stopped eating what little food she had previously been willing to consume. After a particularly bad couple of nights, it was determined that Lucy's best interests would be served by the Rainbow Bridge and she was put ...

Ziva - 11yr Bay Standardbred Mare - 11/30/2011

Ziva was a standardbred mare that was given to my daughter. We lost her first horse due to a twisted intestine so she didn't ride for a year. I told her to put an ad up seeing if anyone need to rehome a horse that she could train for trails and schooling shows. We were contacted by a woman almost immediately stating that she had a horse she could no longer keep asking if we wanted her. My family said We did, so we set up a time for her to bring Ziva to us. Ziva stepped off the trailer, she was perfect. The woman said she was 10 yrs old so we were happy. My daughter trained her all summer, took her to a schooling show and just had fun. This fall she got sick with colic, we found out she was actually older then 10. After a week of treating her and watching over her she passed away.

Kiah - 25yr Bay Thoroughbred Mare - 10/14/2011

Kiah was an older Thoroughbred mare who had been a pasture pet for over 5 years. The last fall she was further declining in health until she was no longer happy. Her owner decided that it was time to put her down, and as the expense to do so ended up more then anticipated, asked our help.

Trey - 4yr Bay Thoroughbred Gelding - 9/10/2011

Trey was #621 from the Sept '11 auction. During the sale it was obvious that this bay TB gelding was very lame and it appeared that there was something seriously wrong with his hind leg. We purchased him during the auction for RB, but due to his wonderful personality Mary requested to take him home for a few days prior to RB so that he could have a few days of love.

Here is Trey's write up in Mary's own words:

We bought Trey at the Auction last Sunday as a rainbow bridge candidate. We were given no information on him but we believe he was 3-4 years old and either a WB or a very heavy TB. He was three legged lame and looked like he hadnt had a good meal in a long time. Staff and I talked and it was decided that after taking Jonah to QAR Sunday I would be bringing Trey home and giving him a few good days before humanel...

Jonah - 25yr Bay Thoroughbred Gelding - 9/5/2011

Jonah was a 25+ year old bay gelding dumped at the September sale (#629) with no information. He was skinny and severely foundered in all four feet; he could barely walk. He had several saddle marks on his back. Someone must have loved him at some time, he was very sweet, let us pet him all over and stood with his head on my chest. He ate half a bag of treats and searched my pockets for more after we ran out. We purchased him for Rainbow Bridge and he was euthanized that same. RIP, old man.

Yankee - 4yr Black Quarter Horse Gelding - 8/13/2011

He was put down for an old injury that didn't heal right. And that caused him to act violent towards people and animals. I had him for 10 months, on his good days he was the sweetest horse you could ever meet. He loved kids, stealing peoples hats and really loved peppermints. I was prepared to own a young pasture pet. Which I was perfectly fine with, he was after all my horse and we all loved him. I would've paid anything to of had him fixed. But no amount of money could. His leg was getting worse and he was in pain and it was hard to watch. He spent the last of his time at my friends house. Mary let him run around and have fun. He made his first horsey friend Crush and he was spoiled as can be. I think of him daily, he will always have a special place in my heart I miss him dearly.

Carrie -  Palomino Quarter Horse Mare - 8/7/2011

Carrie was a 23 year old QH mare who was purchased by the RB fund at the August auction. She was brought with in with #025 by an older man who could no longer ride. She was a roping horse for 15 years and had been part of a packing outfit. She had severe arthritis in her hip which was obvious when she walked. This pretty little mare was trying so hard to stand and be strong but it was very clear her little legs hurt. Since arthritis is incurable and riding would only exacerbate it, we made the decision to purchase her in the ring. She went to QAR that night and is no longer in pain. RIP pretty girl.

Ray - 9yr Chestnut  Stallion - 2/6/2011

Ray was #615 at the February 2011 auction and he was purchased during the sale for RB. Ray was only about 9 years old, and looked like he would have been a really nice horse if he was cared for. Someone near his pen mentioned that he was registered and well bred. This poor boy never had a chance to shine because of his 8-) owner. He was very scared and shied away from anyone who went near him. He was emaciated, terribly neglected, and had something seriously wrong with his pelvis and entire back end. He was covered in rain rot and manure. All day he seemed to be in obvious pan.. he would rock back and forth on his legs and occasionally his front legs would tremble. You could see in his eyes that he was uncomfortable but trying his darnedest to put on a happy face. From the manure stains it appeared he had been spending a lot of time layin...

Lexi -  Chestnut Quarter Horse Mare - 12/8/2010

Lexi was a community RB horse. Her owner had purchased her from the kill pen, but the poor mare was beyond saving. She was emaciated and had a neurological condition, so her owner decided that it would be more humane to euthanize her. The community provided the majority of the mare's euthanasia support and RB was only used for what was left over.

Dilbert - 3yr Chestnut  Stallion - 12/2/2010

Dilbert was a community RB horse where the owner had basically abandoned him in a field. He was badly crippled with legs whose joints appeared to be almost backwards. I showed the pictures to two vets and they had never seen anything like him, but said that there was no way that he would not have been in pain. He was a stallion and was out with some mares who he bred and some of whom were found homes for. Dilbert was taken to QAR and put down on 12/2/10.

Tess - 30yr Chestnut Quarter Horse Mare - 11/2/2010

Tess was a community RB horse who's owners could no longer take care of her and whom no one else wanted to take in and give a home to. Here is the write up that JLehman did for her: I took Tess up to the Olympic Game Farm today. She was a very sweet old chestnut mare, said to be 30. We know very little about her other than she's been handed around and not cared for very well since sometime last spring. She had heavy bone structure and may have been a trail or mountain horse of some kind. It's also been suggested that she might have been a kid's horse due to her calm nature. Tess was underweight, losing her teeth, and had diarrhea. She also seemed very low in energy, which could have been due to any of the above, possibly in combination with old age. She had been advertised at least twice for weeks and no one ever seemed intereste...

Dancer -  Bay / White Paint Mare - 9/6/2010

Dancer was a sweet but crippled bay and white paint mare who was run through the auction as #237. She was bought during the auction for RB, but her foal who was also sold, happily found a home with a member. Dancer was reported to be broke but it was obvious that she had not been well cared for and had severe DSLD. She was put down that night after the auction. RIP Dancer.

Shadow -  Dark Bay Thoroughbred Gelding - 8/4/2010

Shadow (registered name Thelma's Boy) is a TB gelding that was brought in the the Enumclaw Auction today in very poor shape. His rear suspensories and hocks are completely blown, with his fetlocks nearly touching the ground when he walks. He is also very skinny and has fresh cuts and scrapes all over from going down either in the trailer or the pen. He raced a few times when he was younger, very unsuccessfully, and since then has been both a track pony and a pack horse in the mountains. He is tattooed but is NOT listed on Pedigree Query, nor is his dam. He was #364 and was purchased during the auction for RB. Shadow was a very sweet boy who had been the pack horse for my horse Hunter that I got at the same auction. He was very serious about trying to do what you wanted even though it was obvious that he was in a lot of pain. He was intend...

Sunshine - 20yr Chestnut Thoroughbred Mare - 8/4/2010

This older chestnut TB broodmare had been entered for the Aug '10 auction under the number 357, but in the end she was not run through and instead went directly to the kill pen. She had extremely crooked legs and had difficultly moving around. The group named her Sunshine and it was quickly determined that she would be an RB horse. She was due to go down to QAR with Shadow, but because of difficultly loading she ended up being put down at ESP by the vet. Thank you to Sedona and JLehman23 for covering the costs of this girl.

Daisy - 12yr Gray Arabian Mare - 6/7/2010

Daisy was a 12-13 yr old grey Arab mare, brought to the sale with her sister Rose. She was extremely skinny and horribly foundered in her front feet - her right front coffin bone had dropped through her sole a long time ago, and the left one was about to. She was extremely lame. She was not run through the sale, I purchased her from Ron for $50 afterwards. We gave her Ace to make her comfortable until the vet came, and she spent her last 20 minutes or so stuffing her face with grass and being loved on. RIP sweet girl, you're no longer in pain. Your memory will live on in your beautiful sister Rose.

Sadie -  Bay / White Paint Mare - 5/2/2010

Sadie is a sad story of a mare in such bad shape that she went down before she could even go through the auction. While staff were making the rounds we found an old Pinto mare in horrible shape. Cold skin, white gums, eyes glazed over and largely unresponsive. She'd clearly been down in the trailer, and was long past saving. We were planning to buy her for Rainbow Bridge, but she went down in her stall before she even went through. It took three people to get her up - the owner was convinced we could "walk it off." We got her pulled from the sale, and brownstone donated all the funds for euthanasia and QAR. She spent most of her last hour while we coordinated things with her head in my arms, and when the time came she was gone before she even hit the ground. RIP, Sadie.

Neptune -  Chestnut Paint Gelding - 4/3/2010

This old boy really didn't have much wrong with him. He was old and couldn't chew things, but was not skinny coming out of winter so apparently he did fine on a mash diet or some such. He was very sweet and friendly, but still no one wanted him. We waited until right before the ship date, but with no home it was decided it was better to put him down then to let him ship. This boy broke my heart. He shared his trip with Orion who he had become very fond of. RIP sweet boy.

Orion -  Gray Arabian Gelding - 4/3/2010

Orion was a gray Arab gelding that had been dropped off at ESP as a slaughter horse. We were not allowed to really list him as anything other then an RB horse which made it difficult for a home to come forward, if indeed, anyone would have been interested. He had a very cloudy eye and was extremely high strung, but otherwise appeared fairly normal. He was priced at $250 for RB and ended up sharing the trip with his friend Neptune

Gabriel -  Chestnut Arabian Gelding - 3/9/2010

Gabriel was an Arab(?) gelding who was #004 at the March 2010 ESP sale and was priced at $300 in the kill pen. He was skinny, sick, in pain, and had an injury to his back leg that had the entire leg hot and infected. He was in pain to the point where he was lashing out at people and other horses, but he also had moments of sweetness. He was hauled to QAR without problem until it came to unloading, which he had difficultly doing due to weakness in his hind leg. As Zebra posted: "It was over in a heartbeat - I wish that every death could be that quick. He's running in greener pastures now; RIP Gabriel.

Valentina -  Chestnut Appaloosa Mare - 2/15/2010

Valentina was a very sweet mare who was run through the auction (Feb '10 #533), but was unlucky enough to not find a home in the ring or even afterward in the kill pen. She was completely lame and had to be forced to move at all due to the enormous pain that she was in. She was priced originally at $450, but Ron later lowered her price to $400 when he had to move her to her own pen because she was so uncomfortable. The costs for her ended up being $400 (purchase), $60 (euthanasia), and $250 (removal). Unfortunately I do not have the record of fundraising on this mare since it appears to have been done in a separate threads, so all I can say is thank you to the folks who donated, whoever you were.

I've tried to summarize the thread in order to post it here, but I cannot do better then KL's final words about this mare:

Hannah -  Bay  Mare - 2/5/2010

Hannah was an old bay mare who was dumped at Enumclaw Pavilion the week before the auction (1/31/10). We gave her the name Hannah because it means "her prayers were answered." We only wish that it could have been sooner. She had a severe case of Cushings and her knees were in horrible shape; she could barely stand up. Ron, the owner of the Pavilion, intended to ship her to slaughter like this - she clearly wouldn't fetch any price in the ring. She was old, in pain, with knees so bad she didn't like to move, cushings, and most dire of all - no home. She was not going to be allowed to go through the auction and in fact we were given only 2 days to get her funds together or she would be shipped to slaughter. Thanks to donations (mostly JLehman23) she was bailed the first night at a cost of $300, and we then started arranging for euthanasia a...
